Cataract Gorge
Joint artists’ residency: Stephen and Susan Hobson.
Between September and October 2013 we were artists in-residence at the Kings Bridge Cottage, Cataract Gorge, Launceston: Susan writing and Stephen drawing and painting.
I set out to playfully introduce my rabbits to the Gorge – a sort of pseudo recolonisation of the area. My rabbits had their portraits made, posing like tourists in the past, before moving on to the next scenic wonder.
It was a gentle way of making visible the colonisation of the wilds of Tasmania by European people and their animals.
I gave a lecture on my work at the University of Tasmania (Inveresk), and a solo exhibition at Sawtooth ARI Gallery, Launceston.
Our abiding memory will be of the Gorge – the river and cliffs constantly changing under the ever-shifting light (both day and night) – seen from the vantage of the cottage.
